When Susan A. moved to Juan Street in San Diego’s Mission Hills neighborhood three years ago, she had no idea she was settling into one of the most challenging stretches of the Susan G. Komen San Diego 3-Day® route.
When Jude Bayasi wanted to volunteer to support the breast cancer community, he never expected his search would lead him to starting a breast cancer awareness club at Arizona State University (ASU). Inspired by his grandmother’s experience with the disease, Jude connected with Komen and launched the Breast Cancer Hope Initiative, giving fellow students a way to raise awareness, fundraise and take action on campus.
When Amanda learned she had breast cancer, she wasn’t prepared for how fast everything moved. “I was diagnosed at the end of October, by the second week of November I had my egg retrieval surgery and then a week after that, I began chemotherapy,” she said. “In three weeks, I did all of that.”
For longtime participant Sheryl M., her reason for walking the 3-Day 17 times has evolved over the years. Her first walk — the 2005 Philadelphia 3-Day — was in memory of her mother, Sandee. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35 and died at the age of 46.
Every spring since 1982, Anne Ashburn has laced up for Bloomsday, Spokane’s annual 12K race. For more than four decades, it’s been a constant in her life.
