Stories Learn more about metastatic breast cancer Metastatic Breast Cancer is the most advanced stage of breast cancer and affects approximately 154,000 men and women in the U.S. Often called Stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is breast cancer that has spread beyond the breasts to other organs of the body – most often the bones, lungs, liver or brain. About 94 percent of people living with metastatic breast cancer were treated for an earlier stage of breast cancer that came back – sometimes many years later. In 2019, metastatic breast cancer will be responsible for more than 42,000 breast cancer deaths. There are no cures – yet – for metastatic breast cancer.
